France & UK went to Zambia 2010

On 6thAugust 2010 the UK team left Heathrow for Lusaka, Zambia. It was an immense privilege for all those who participated, young people and leaders alike.

We met up with most of the French team on the bus at Johannesburg as we headed for our connecting flight to Lusaka. As we landed in Lusaka we saw a large banner welcoming us to Zambia:

We were taken straight to the VIP lounge whilst the luggage that had arrived was collected for us by the Zambian team and then we were off to one of the many churches we were to visit whist in Zambia.

During our trip we saw many parts of Zambia in addition to the capital Lusaka. Time was spent in the Copperbelt and the outlying areas of Lusaka as well as visiting Livingstone and the amazing Victoria Falls.

We also spent time on a “work camp” at Kafue Boys school where the team did painting, gardening, cooking and typing. Time was also found in the programme to relax and we enjoyed a couple of camp fires whilst in Kafue. In both Kafue and Livingstone we went on sunset river cruises.

Other highlights to our visit included a visit to the French ambassador’s residence where we also met the British High Commissioner to Zambia:

making friends with all the host families who provided so much for us; and visiting lots of churches, where we experienced their warmth of hospitality and their vibrant worship.

Many of the churches we visited were full to overflowing and often in services it was a case of standing room only. The age profile was very different to the UK church population with 75% being under 35 years old! Boys Brigade and Girls Brigade companies were in almost every church we saw and they regularly welcomed us with their marching, music, dancing and poetry:

As a team we had some life changing experiences and would all recommend a visit to Zambia. We arrived home exhausted on Sunday 29thAugust but with some amazing memories.

Now we look ahead to August 2011 when the L’Eglise Reforme (France) will be hosting visitors from Zambia and the UK.
